Fire Alarms and Smoke Detection systems

Are you a business that is looking to install or update your current fire detection and alarm system? For the past 15+ years we have helped tens of local Swindon and Wiltshire Business with their fire detection systems. From initial installation, right through to annual checks of the lighting and alarms systems. 
The installation and testing requirements for all fire alarms in the UK are set out in the following regulations:

• Fire Safety Act 2007 - This act requires all relevant businesses to have in place "adequate fire precautions" to protect their employees and customers from fire. This includes installing and maintaining a fire alarm system in accordance with the relevant British Standards.
• BS 5839-1:2017 - This British Standard sets out the requirements for the design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and testing of fire detection and fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises.
• BS 5839-6:2016 - This British Standard sets out the requirements for the design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and testing of fire detection and fire alarm systems in high-rise residential buildings.

The specific requirements for fire alarm installation and testing will vary depending on factors such as the type and size of premises and the number of people who use it. However, the following are some general requirements:

• Fire alarm systems must be installed by a competent persons such as ourselves. 
• Fire alarm systems must be tested on a weekly basis to ensure that they are in working order.
• Fire alarm systems must be inspected and serviced by a competent person at least every six months.
• Fire alarm systems must be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Failure to comply with the fire alarm installation and testing requirements could result in prosecution and/or financial penalties.

Here is some additional information about the fire alarm testing policy:

• The weekly test should be carried out at approximately the same time each week - (If FSR Security installs your alarm system, we will give clear guidance on how these are performed.) 
• The test should include sounding the alarm and checking that all detectors and sounders are working properly.
• The test should also include checking that the fire alarm system is able to communicate with the fire brigade.
• The results of the weekly test should be recorded in a logbook, which will be provided by ourselves.

The fire alarm system should also be tested more thoroughly on a monthly or quarterly basis. This test should include simulating a fire by activating the fire alarm manually and checking that the fire brigade is alerted.
